Portugal is thriving in a new age of discovery.

More than 500 years after this nation pioneered maritime exploration around the world, filmmakers have turned their cameras on our land’s rich heritage, rugged coastline, and rural landscapes in the sunniest corner of Europe to reveal its many charms.

Terrific weather conditions await, particularly in the main film hub of Lisbon. Wintertime sunshine of 6-7 hours per day and an average of 20 dry days per month is bettered by a summertime daylight average of 12-13 hours during 29 dry days per month. It’s a wonder we Portuguese ever ventured beyond our own shores!

The country has a huge potential for any kind of location, interior or exterior. Moreover, for most of them, you don’t need to go beyond the Lisbon area. In a circle of 50km-60km around our capital, you can find all sorts of landscapes, atmospheres, and surroundings, like our wonderful coastline, forest, mountains, and all kinds of roads, beautiful villas, modern buildings, and so on…

The rewards for going beyond are worth the travel costs for suitable projects. Nature reigns on densely forested mountains surrounding placid lakes. Traditional cultivation of cork and olive trees in southern plains and vineyards on hillsides sloping into the Douro River stand in harmonious testimony to centuries of labour you can taste.

The Portuguese archipelagos of Madeira and Azores emerged from the Atlantic as volcanoes in the distant past. A gentle climate most all year-round now makes them the perfect home for curated gardens and unspoilt wilderness providing multiple looks in close proximity.

Location permitting across Portugal can be arranged most everywhere within 1-2 weeks, depending on the complexity of the requirements. There are very few exceptions taking more time, such as national parks.

The Portuguese are resolute problem solvers, even amidst the stress of a shoot. Together, our creative nature and grounded diligence can cut through the confusion to determine a path forward. What filmmaker doesn’t value that!

Though relatively small in scale, our film industry is composed of professionals experienced at working with producers and directors from around the globe. Although Portuguese is the 6th most spoken language in the world, we are used to learning other languages. On a Portuguese film set you’ll find conversational English to be the common, not to mention French, Spanish, Italian, or even German!

In turn, it is a world of faces that delivers surprising casting diversity in a nation typically known for dark-haired Caucasians. Centuries of trade with people from Northern Europe, Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, and East Asia provide for a talent pool worthy of exploration.

A critical bottom line is that Portugal is still not an expensive country compared to most of its European partners. You can easily indulge yourself in a luxury five-star hotel, savour remarkable food, and be treated as if you were a prince or a princess – all at a much lower cost than you’d ever expect!

If you wish to unwind after a long day’s work, we can organize all sorts of relaxing moments for you. From a memorable dining experience to dancing ’til dawn – for the wrap party, of course!

We Portuguese take pride in our welcoming nature. We extend that to our work together on and off-set because filming abroad is an experience lived every moment that you’re in our country. We put our all into making sure you’re already missing Portugal – and arranging a return trip – by the time you return home. We’ll see you, again, soon.

We look forward to welcoming you for a shoot in our beautiful country.
