This month’s opening of a horizon tank in New Zealand adds a new dimension to the local film industry.  PSN Partners in Asia Pacific, the Americas, and Europe are now strategically positioned to provide full shoot support in countries with operational water tanks.

Commercial filmmakers shooting a project that calls for a tank can often contain costs by choosing to shoot in a country where the rest of their creative brief can be accomplished.

PSN Partners in Mexico, Ireland, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Romania, and Australia have contributed to a newly published article in LBB that features the new water tank near Auckland while offering specs of other tanks worldwide.

Commercial producers are driven to deliver more content for less cost.  And Eastern Europe has long been a cost-effective haven for location shoots.  Lesser known is the region's draw for producers of projects requiring studios and back lots.

Industry media KFTV interviews PSN's Michael Moffett about how the trend is playing out in recent commercial films serviced locally by PSN Partners in the region.

And all the while having fun at it!  After all, a bit of mischief keeps us on our toes.  So let the kids race sports cars and fly that drone at the airport.  And film it all to remind us that where there’s a will there’s most definitely a way when it comes to PSN shoot support worldwide.

Happy viewing of these films and more in our latest newsletter.

Producers shooting film and photo projects overseas have good reason to look south.  While this may be the season, there are lesser-known advantages that make countries like New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Uruguay, and Chile worth considering year-round.

Need a state-of-the-art water tank?  A Russian arm?  How about babies galore?

LBB surveyed PSN Partners in each country, and their clients, about exchange rates, visas, drone flights, infrastructure, and more to share the results of that research in this article shining a spotlight on work and pleasure on the other side of the Equator.

The creative use of drones in filmmaking can easily get grounded by restrictions on location.  That’s where creative production shines.

The decision to pre-record the drone display of lights during Lady Gaga’s recent Super Bowl halftime performance is just one example.

PSN Ireland producer Dara McClatchie confronted another challenge for a recently released Virgin Media Ireland film.  Director Brian Williams sought an airplane hangar opening out onto a tarmac where he could film one continuous shot with a drone.

“Utilising the full PSN network across Europe (our tight schedule didn’t allow for travel further afield) we were able to pin down several great location options within 48 hours,"  says McClatchie. “The restrictions around drone filming narrowed the options but we were able to offer our client a superb choice and hand on heart say we had looked throughout Europe for the optimum filming location.”

The resulting film shot on location with PSN Ukraine is featured in this just released LBB article.

The can-do attitude to be found in New Zealand is legendary.  And thanks to an enviable list of feature films shot there, including Avatar, the Hobbit series, King Kong, and more, producers are increasingly aware of the advantages that our PSN New Zealand Partner, Iris Weber, can deliver on demand.

Q:  What is the best season to shoot in New Zealand?

A:  New Zealand is popular with visiting productions seeking opposite season looks all year round.  Our southern hemisphere summer runs from December to March, with long daylight hours and impressive light. Fall is from March to May. Winter runs from June to September with snow on the mountains. The rest of the country rarely sees snow, so locations at lower elevations can be shot year round. Spring is from September to November.

What is the allure of shooting in Australia? According to PSN Partner Andrew Wareham and his team, it comes down to picturesque landscapes, a diverse talent pool, and the can-do attitude of the local crew.

Q: What makes Australia such a great destination for international productions?
A: The broad range of breathtaking locations is one of the major drawcards to shooting in Australia. Landscapes such as the world’s largest coral reef, pristine beaches, wild untamed mountains, tropical rainforest, and desolate arid plains, just to reference a few, allow the flexibility to capture variety of locations efficiently. Combined with the affordability of the Australian dollar and the professionalism of the local crew, this formula generates a lot of repeat business.

Q: When is the best time to shoot in Australia?
