The Pearl of the Atlantic

Due west of Casablanca there lies an archipelago in Portugal of volcanic origin like the neighboring Canary Islands of Spain, but greener. Vineyards flourish on its hilly terraces and centenary forests blanket mountains as lush as Hawaii that pour onto inviting seascapes. A true “diamond in the rough” according to Lucasfilm VP of Physical Production, Candice Campos, after filming scenes on Madeira for season 1 for the Star Wars saga, The Acolyte.

The Portugal film incentive of 25-30% is now boosted to 40% for qualifying film and TV production expenditures made in Madeira. ATL expenditures in EU territories – such as actors – may also qualify for the Portugal film incentive.

To discover its charms, esteemed members of the Producers Guild of America (PGA), Production Guild of Great Britain (PGGB), and Location Managers Guild International (LMGI) converged on the Madeira archipelago for a FAM trip in late November 2022 coordinated by PSN with support from Madeira Tourism.

Watch this film for behind-the-scenes impressions of these producers and location managers. Also check out the PGGB and LMGI feature articles about the FAM trip plus an LMGI photo gallery of unseen Madeira. There’s also industry media coverage published by KFTV and The Location Guide about the filmmakers’ visit to this unique corner of Portugal.

During 3 packed days we traversed the main island of Madeira to explore diverse filming locations never more than an hour’s drive from the administrative capital of Funchal. Locations included Cais do Carvão, Doca do Cavacas, Praia Formosa, Câmara de Lobos, Forte São Tiago, Quinta das Vinhas, Jardim do Mar, Paúl do Mar, Anjos Waterfall, Ponta do Sol, Seixal, Chão da Ribeira, Levada dos Cedros, Fanal, Fajã dos Padres, Ponta de São Lourenço, Quinta do Lorde, Miradouro do Guindaste, Quinta do Furão, São Jorge, Pico do Arieiro, Porto da Cruz, Ponta do Rosto, and Água de Pena.
